1. There are two categories for Young Photographers (free entry)

  • Children under the age of 10.
  • Young photographers between the ages of 11 and 16.

A maximum of three photos taken at Ness, can be entered depicting something plant, garden or wildlife-related that interests you.

2. There are four categories for adults (17 or over on the competition entry date).

  • Plants: A plant (tree, shrub or flower) either singly or in a group of the same plant, or a close-up taken at Ness Botanic Gardens.
  • Gardens: A landscape photograph taken at Ness Botanic Gardens
  • Wildlife: Animals, insects, birds or fungi taken at Ness Botanic Gardens
  • Abstract: taken at Ness Botanic Gardens.

You may enter as many photographs as you wish in any of the categories.

3. Photographers of all ages can also enter the new Social Media category: just post your picture via Ness's Twitter, Instagram or Facebook accounts, using the hashtag #NBGphotocomp. The image can be related to any of the categories - Plants, Gardens, Wildlife and Abstract. A monthly winner will be selected and then be fed into the competition judging.

The Prizes

Selected from all the categories including Young Photographer, the overall winner will be awarded:

  • Ness Photographer of the Year
  • Receive a year's membership of the Friends of Ness Gardens
  • A day with the Garden Photography School's professional photographer Michael Turner

The adult category winners will receive:

  • a year's membership of the Friends of Ness Gardens allowing free access to the Gardens.

The prizes for the Young Photographer categories are:

  • a one to one session with professional photographer Michael Turner;
  • a year's membership of the Friends of Ness Gardens allowing free access to the Gardens.

All winners will be invited to an awards ceremony at Ness Botanic Gardens and the winning photographs will be displayed at Ness before being shown in our touring exhibition.
