Introduction to Garden Design (day time)

Intro To Garden DesignWant to make changes to your garden and don't know where to start? This introductory course acts as a comprehensive guide covering all the basics of designing a garden.

There are no formal entry requirements; all you need is an interest in plants and gardening.

The course starts on Thursday 24th April (9.30-12noon)

10 Weekly Sessions

Course Overview

The course is taught through talks; demonstrations and a range of activities both in the classroom and out in the gardens (weather permitting).  Please come dressed in suitable clothing for the weather (i.e. waterproof jackets and wear suitable shoes). Also bring pen and paper.

Week 1 - Where to start and understanding your garden.

Week 2 - Basic site surveys and scale drawing

Week 3 - Garden layouts and the importance of shapes & lines

Week 4 - Design principles: Unity, Scale & Proportion, Balance & Symmetry, Repetition   and Movement.

Week 5 - The Role of hard landscaping

Week 6 - Plant types and their uses.

Week 7 - Creating planting plans

Week 8 - Styles & themes: formal/informal, mixed borders, traditional herbaceous & naturalist plantings.

Week 9 - Styles & themes: Woodland/shade, drought tolerance, lawns & meadows, containers, water and bog.

Week 10 - Implementing your plan; what order to things in and where to source materials and plants.
