Orchids in South West China

Sunday 19 March 2017 14:30 - Sunday 19 March 2017 16:00

Discover some fasinating slipper orchids and, in passing, some interesting bits of China in this fascinating tale of a 2009 planting hunting trip to Yunnan and Sechuan.

Iain Wright made his first visit to China, travelling as members of the Alpine Garden Society Expedition and spent three weeks in this botanical hot spot, much of the time at high altitude, and encountered myriads of orchids and flowering plants.

Yunnan and Sechuan, in southwest China are two regions characteristed by river basins, mountains and deep valleys and probably the richest botanically in the world's temperate regions. with over 17,000 species of plants,  of which an estimated 2,500 are endemic (found no where else on Earth). As a comparsion the UK has just over 1400 native plants of which 49 are endemic!
