Propagating your own plants is fun; lets you grow
hard-to-find plant material, and can save you money. Packed with
practical, hands-on information, this course shows you how to start
your own plants from seed, by division, cuttings, layering, and
grafting. Take the mystery out of plant propagation with
step-by-step instructions and learn all the essentials for
producing your own plants.
There are no formal entry requirements; all you need is an
interest in plants and gardening.
The course starts on Thursday 28th February
6 weekly sessions
The course is taught through talks; demonstrations and a range
of activities both in the classroom and out in the gardens (weather
permitting). Please come dressed in suitable clothing for the
weather, i.e. waterproof jackets and wear suitable shoes) and bring
pen, paper and a pair of secateurs if you have them
Week 1 - The basic concepts of propagation including basic
equipment and how to choose which technique is suitable for what
Week 2 - How to harvest, store and sow seeds.
Week 3 - Learn how to propagate plants by division and root
Week 4 - Learn how to propagate plants by a range of different
stem cuttings; basal tip, softwood, semi ripe and hardwood.
Week 5 - Understand a range of techniques used to layer shrubs
and propagate bulbs.
Week 6 - Learn why many plants in commercial nurseries are
propagated by budding and grafting and how to do it
