RHS Level 2: Choosing, establishing & maintenance of garden plants & lawns

Are you a keen gardener, passionate about plants and wanting to learn more? Or do you want to start a career in horticulture?

Learn how to choose plants, when to plant them and then how to look after them.

This course starts on Thursday 18th September 1-3.30pm 6 weekly sessions. 

Course Overview

The course is taught through talks; demonstrations and a range of activities both in the classroom and out in the gardens (weather permitting).  Please come dressed in suitable clothing for the weather (i.e. waterproof jackets and wear suitable shoes). Also bring pen and paper.

Week 1 - Seasonal Displays: annuals, containers & bedding.
Week 2 - Aquatics: types, planting and aftercare.
Week 3 - Alpines: types, planting and aftercare.
Week 4 - Herbaceous Periennials: choosing for different situations and aftercare.
Week 5 - Woody Plants including planting and pruning.
Week 6 - Lawns: establishing, maintainence, and other things to do with grass.


This course is a module of the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture.  The RHS Level 2 is taught at Ness on a rolling programme of eight modules, each lasting 6 weeks. You can begin at the start of any module and study as many modules as you like.

Who is it suitable for?

18+. There are no formal entry requirements; although the course is aimed at gardeners with some experience or those who have completed some level 1 courses.

What does it cost?

£65  (£60 Friends of Ness Gardens & University of Liverpool Staff) per module
