RHS Level 3 Garden survey techniques and design principles

RHS-QUALIFICATIONS-MARK-RGBv1This is a unit of the RHS Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture and starts on Wednesday 14 March 1-4pm 6 weekly sessions.


Course Overview

The course is taught through talks; demonstrations and a range of activities both in the classroom and out in the gardens (weather permitting).  Please come dressed in suitable clothing for the weather (i.e. waterproof jackets and wear suitable shoes). Also bring pen and paper.

This module provides an understanding of garden styles, site appraisal and survey techniques, and the principles that underpin garden design.

Week 1 - Understanding and developing a client brief

Week 2 - Conducting a site appraisal

Week 3 - Basic surveying techniques, record and using information gathered.

Week 4 - Principles of Garden Design

Week 5 - Historical development of Garden styles

Week 6 - Historical development of Garden styles


The RHS Level 3 is taught at Ness on a rolling programme of eight modules, each lasting 6 weeks. You can begin at the start of any module and study as many modules as you like.

No formal entry requirements although we strongly recommend learners have completed a level 2 horticultural qualification or have equivalent experience.
