RHS Level 3 Setting out and construction of landscaping elements

RHS-QUALIFICATIONS-MARK-RGBv1Are you a keen gardener, passionate about plants and wanting to learn more? Do you want to start or develop your exisiting career in horticulture?

This module provides an understanding provides an understanding of the principles of setting out a site and constructing hard landscaping features in gardens. In addition the module examines the management of the production process, associated equipment and aftercare.

This module starts on Wednesday 12 September 1-4pm 6 weekly sessions.

Course Overview

The course is taught through talks; demonstrations and a range of activities both in the classroom and out in the gardens (weather permitting).  Please come dressed in suitable clothing for the weather (i.e. waterproof jackets and wear suitable shoes). Also bring pen and paper.

Week 1 - The need to plan landscape works.

Week 2 - How to setout the major features of a design on the ground.

Week 3 - Impacts on soil including the correct handling, storage and reinstatement of soil.

Week 4 - Foundations and drainage systems for hard landscaping.

Week 5 - Materials and construction procedures for garden surfaces.

Week 6 - Materials and construction procedures for garden walls, fences and pergolas.


The RHS Level 3 is taught at Ness on a rolling programme of eight modules, each lasting 6 weeks. You can begin at the start of any module and study as many modules as you like.

No formal entry requirements although we strongly recommend learners have completed a level 2 horticultural qualification or have equivalent experience.
