RHS Level 3:The root environment, plant nutrition and growing systems

This is a unit of the RHS Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture and starts on Wednesday 4 September 1-4pm 6 weekly sessions.


Course Overview

The course is taught through talks; demonstrations and a range of activities both in the classroom and out in the gardens (weather permitting).  Please come dressed in suitable clothing for the weather (i.e. waterproof jackets and wear suitable shoes). Also bring pen and paper.

Building on the basic principles of soil science this module provides the underpinning knowledge required for the management of soils, growing media and plant nutrition. In addition the module gives learners an understanding of organic growing systems.

Week 1 - Formation and properties of soils.

Week 2 - Formation and properties of growing media

Week 3 - Relationship between plant growth, air and water in soils and other growing media.

Week 4 - The role of living organisms in soil processes.

Week 5 - The role of nutrients in plant growth.

Week 6 - Organic growing.


The RHS Level 3 is taught at Ness on a rolling programme of eight modules, each lasting 6 weeks. You can begin at the start of any module and study as many modules as you like.

No formal entry requirements although we strongly recommend learners have completed a level 2 horticultural qualification or have equivalent experience.
