Thursday RHS Level 2: Plant classification, structure and function

RHS-QUALIFICATIONS-MARK-RGBv1Are you a keen gardener, passionate about plants and wanting to learn more? Or do you want to start a career in horticulture?

This course will allow you to understand how plants are named and how they work. You will discover the role and function of plant parts including fundamental processes in clear and easy to understand language.  If, as a gardener, you understand how a plant works then it is a lot easier to grow!

This is a unit of the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture and starts on Thursday 13 September 1-3.30pm 6 weekly sessions. The unit is also taught on a Tuesday starting 11 September

Course Overview

The course is taught through talks; demonstrations and a range of activities both in the classroom and out in the gardens (weather permitting).  Please come dressed in suitable clothing for the weather (i.e. waterproof jackets and wear suitable shoes). Also bring pen and paper.

Week 1 - How plants are named and why. Differences between major groups of plants and an introduction to plant evolution.

Week 2 - Stems, how plants grow and develop. An introduction to plant cells and the basic characteristics and role of plant tissues.

Week 3 - Leaves, how they work including photosynthesis and respiration.

Week 4 - The structure of roots and their adaptations. Find out how water and nutrients get from the soil to the top of a tree? 

Week 5 - Types and structures of flowers and what they are really for.

Week 6 - Fruits, Seeds and the next generation.

This is a unit of the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture.  The RHS Level 2 is taught at Ness on a rolling programme of eight units, each lasting 6 weeks. You can begin at the start of any unit and study as many unit as you like.

There are no formal entry requirements; although the course is aimed at gardeners with some experience or those who have completed some level 1 courses.
