Thursday RHS Level 2 Protected environments and their use in plant cultivation

This is a unit of the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture and starts on Thursday 3rd May 1-3.30pm 6 weekly sessions. The unit is also taught on a Tuesday starting 1st May

 

Course Overview

The course is taught through talks; demonstrations and a range of activities both in the classroom and out in the gardens (weather permitting).  Please come dressed in suitable clothing for the weather (i.e. waterproof jackets and wear suitable shoes). Also bring pen and paper.

This unit will allow you to understand the control of the environment in (greenhouses, frames, polythene tunnels and cloches), the production of a range of plants and the care of plants in the house and conservatory.

Week 1 - Types of structures (greenhouses, frames, polythene tunnels and cloches) and their uses.

Week 2 - Differences between the indoor and outdoor enviroment and how to the environment in a protected structure.

Week 3 - Uses: overwintering, production of crops and ornamental plants

Week 4 - Uses: production of cut flowers & bulb forcing

Week 5 - Uses: creating and maintaining displays

Week 6 - Choice and care of house Plants  

 

The RHS Level 2 is taught at Ness on a rolling programme of eight units, each lasting 6 weeks. You can begin at the start of any unit and study as many unit as you like.

There are no formal entry requirements; although the course is aimed at gardeners with some experience or those who have completed some level 1 courses.
