Categories & Prizes

The Categories

1. Plants: Celebrate the plants at Ness and take a photograph of a plant (tree, shrub or flower) either singly, in a group of the same plant, or in a mixed group of plants.

2. Landscapes: let your imagination flourish during any season and enter a picture of your favourite view, part of Ness or people enjoying the garden.

3. Wilder-Ness: in a world where natural habitats are being depleted, gardens are a haven for wildlife. Ness is home to more than 800 species of animals, insects, birds and fungi.  Try and capture an image of the wildlife at Ness.

4. Abstract & Details: a close-up of a plant or an abstract view of plants or gardens. Let your creatively run wild and create a unique piece of photographic art that may not be a literal view of the subject itself.

5. Seasonal Portfolio: Ness is open all year round to visitors so we are inviting you to create a set of up to six images that capture the beauty of Ness throughout the year.  The portfolio needs to portray Ness at its very best in each of the four seasons; Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. The portfolio must work together as a set, themes are also encouraged.

6. Social Media: photographers of all ages can post their picture via Ness's Twitter, Instagram or Facebook accounts, using the hashtag #NBGphotocomp. The image can be related to any of the categories - Plants, Gardens, Wildlife and Abstract. Each monthly winner will be selected and then be fed into the competition judging.

7. Young Photographer (10-17 years): A maximum of three photos taken at Ness & free to enter, can be entered depicting something plant, garden or wildlife-related that interests you.

8. Children's Photographer (under 10s): A maximum of three photos taken at Ness & free to enter, can be entered depicting something plant, garden or wildlife-related that interests you.
